More than a couple of friends have said they couldn’t get into this book because they couldn’t stand Monty’s initial arrogance. But, trust me, if you stick with it, you’ll come to understand why this well-off English gentleman-in-the-making is the way he is.

“The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue” is an entertaining story at its surface, but it’s also a story of the coming out process, a story of growing up and finding yourself, a story of being true to who you are — once you’ve figure that out.

Author Mackenzi Lee tells a familiar story layered in personal guilt and shame - plus the awkward coming-of-age process we all go through - mixed in with class and social expectations, and more than a dash of racial and gender intersectionality to boot.

Come for the silly adventure, and stay for the cute romance. This book is the perfect companion for some poolside sangria and summertime sun.

And if you’re looking for something to listen to on the commutes home, I highly recommend the audiobook version read by Christian Coulson (aka - Tom Riddle in the “Harry Potter” movies).

“We’re not courting trouble,” I say. “Flirting with it, at most.”
— Henry "Monty" Montague in "The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue"

“It’s a warm and joyous romp of a book, with a beautifully constructed romance and a thoughtful examination of intersectional privilege. And it’s possibly the most purely fun book I’ve encountered in ages.”
